During the twelve years spent working in the big logging camps, on the drives, hunting and cruising on foot, he learned ma things about the woods and won a reputation as a crack pistol and rifle shot. He spent two years in the Army during World War I and then a short time as a salesman for the Western Cartridge Company. But his first love remained for the great outdoors and after a few years he returned to the woods as a warden for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Game. He remained as a warden until his death in 1946 shortly after the manuscript for this book was completed. He contributed stories to may national magazines, but Ridge Runner is his only book.
